Different types of arched windows
Doodle a picture of your house and what does it look like? We’ll hazard a guess that it’s a square box, with several rectangular windows, a rectangular door, maybe even with a square chimney perched on top. Are we right? Thought so.
If you’re tired of the same old same, maybe it’s time to break away from the straight lines of traditional windows and think outside of the box (literally!). And what better way to do that than by embracing the soft curves of arched window frames.
Arched windows have long been admired in churches and historic buildings but it’s only in more recent years that their popularity has grown for more common domestic use. Today arched window frames offer an easy and relatively cheap way to add design and personality to your home or workspace.

Types of arched windows
When it comes to arched windows there are a whole host of options available to you. Let’s take a closer look at a few of the most popular styles:
Standard arch – suited to most homes, this simplistic arch is created with a regular rectangular window where the top is curved into an attractive arch. It is often chosen to emphasise height and promote a feeling of elegance.
Arch within a square frame – if you feel uniform lines work well for your home but you would still like to try and mix things up a little – what about an arch within a square frame? This type of arched window gives you all the benefits of a more traditional look but with added pizazz. Whilst externally your house will maintain the same traditional kerb appeal, from inside your property the internal arch can really focus the eye, framing the view outside and creating a focal point.
D frame – this popular arched window resembles the letter D lying on its side, which gives a subtle curve to the top of the window frame.
Arched vertical sliders – whilst traditionally arched windows don’t open, it is possible to have arched window frames that do, with arched vertical sliders. These are a great option if you’re thinking of installing the window in a room that would benefit from ventilation.
Bespoke – do a brief internet search of arches and you’ll be swamped with images – 3-pointed arch, inflexed arch, oriental arch, the list goes on. There is an arch for every sense of style – so if you find a particular arch that takes your fancy, why not opt for a bespoke window, made specifically to your request and measurements?
